Which type of pine to buy?

I am brand new to the woodworking world, so please be patient! I was at home depot the other day pricing out wood to make the ten dollar ledges. There several different types of pine to choose from. The cheapest (therefore my favorite) had several knots in the boards, whereas the more expensive "select" pine was basically knot free.

My question to you is, can I sand (or do something) to the cheaper wood so the knots aren't visable? Would several coats of paint cover them up? Or should I invest in the more expensive pine to avoid knots?

"Paint Grade" pine has knots. Just don't buy boards with sticky knots because they are bleeding sap.

Fill the irregularities around the knot with wood filler.

Sand it smooth.

Seal the knots with a bit of shellac (buy a spray can of it) to keep the paint from getting stained.

Prime the wood

Paint the wood your finish color.

It's somewhere between the cheap wood at the home center and the select grade they sell. You'll have to track it down at a lumber yard, but it's worth the effort. Last lot I picked up was amazing. There are knots, but they're small and solid, without chips or cracks.
