1/2" vs 3/4"

How do I decide which thickness to use? I have several plans that I've developed on my own after seeing furniture I like (i.e. ottoman, storage chest, shelves, etc.) but I don't know what determines the thickness. Thanks for any help.

It depends on the properties you need from the material. 3/4" material will be more rigid, 1/2" less so. 1/2" material is better for situations where you can't afford to give up the extra space from the 3/4" material, like a desk drawer.

The woodbin has a online calculator to determine this for shelves but you could probably use it to determine the thickness for other applications if used correctly. The link is as follows http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm

Fine woodworking also cites this calculator and adds some tips. See link as follows http://www.finewoodworking.com/SkillsAndTechniques/SkillsAndTechniquesA…
