What type of wood for a Brookstone bed?

I am planning on building a brookstone type bed but in sectionals, kind of like the storage captain's bed plans. I have been able to find pine panels that are wide enough (they look like smaller boards glued together), pine boards, pine plywood, oak plywood, and red oak boards. What would be best to use? Will the pine panels hold up the weight okay (they would be easier to cut than the plywood)? Or should I go with plywood? In one thread I saw someone say plywood holds up better than dimensional boards. Any comments? And will pine beds hold up in a boys bedroom okay or get too beat up (should I go with oak)?

Pine is very durable wood, but it's soft. White pine takes dents like crazy, but it stays strong. Yellow pine will take fewer dents, and stay just as strong if not stronger. You can also save some on your materials if you learn how to glue up panels. You'll find good videos on youtube.
