Beautiful handcrafted wood fishing game with wood pole and wood fish.  Free DIY plans by Ana-white.com

Well, this is it.  The final Handbuilt Holiday plan of 2015.

Are you a little sad too?

It's been a great joy to be able to design these fun projects, and work with Jaime from That's My Letter to get these project plans delivered to you.  This year you've challenged and inspired us to think out of the box and create projects that not only are handmade and affordable, but unique and sure to be treasured and loved for many years.

Today's project, though, has us thinking in the box.

How darling is this wood fishing game, and all it's colorful little fish?

Each fish has a simple metal screw in the middle.

The fishing poles are just wood dowels, with a magnet tied to the end. So simple, yet so beautiful, and sure to bring hours of imaginitive play.

As a mom, I can really appreciate a toy like this - it's educational and beautiful, and comes with a storage box to neatly put it away when not in use.  That is, of course, if you don't want to keep this beautiful project on display.

Time to go fishing in your scrap wood pile and make this project!

The full plans follow (if this is the homepage you'll need to click READ MORE below), but before you grab those, please take a second to read Jaime's post for lots more tips, photos and building advice.  And do thank her for sharing her hard work and creativitiy.  She is special!

You'll also want to check out all the plans (from this year and all previous years) in our Holiday section

Thank you again for being part of our 2015, and giving us an opportunity to design projects for you.  We hope you loved the projects as much as we've loved creating them for you.  Please share if you build, it truly makes our day to see that our time is well spent doing what we do.

Have the Happiest Holiday!

XO Ana

Instructions

Step 1

Attach the 1x3 boards together at corners to create the box. Then attach 1/4" plywood to the bottom of the box with 3/4" nails or staples and glue.

Step 2

Use the 3/4" nails or staples and wood glue to attach 1/4" plywood to the 1x2s. TIP: Apply glue to the 1x2s and set in position with 7/8" in on all outside edges. Let the glue dry. Then flip over and add the 3/4" nails or staples to further secure.

Step 3

For the fish, this free template was used. Use a jigsaw to cut the fish out of 1/2" plywood. Clamp the plywood to a stable worksurface, and cut where jigsaw blade can move freely below the plywood. You may need to re-position wood to cut the entire shape out.

Step 4

Fishing poles - cut the 3/4" dowels to 20" in length.  Drill a hole in the end and attach rope.  If you are concerned about the weight of the magnet, you can also place the magnets on the fish, and use a smaller magnet on the end of the pole.
