UPDATE: I've posted the plans for the mudroom bench here and the video tutorial for the boot storage conversion here.  Check them out too!

Happy Friday!!!

What a nice surprise to see this article on Yahoo News this morning!

I remember just five years ago getting some pretty odd looks pushing a lumber cart full of boards through The Home Depot, toddler in tow.  Much has changed - these days, the lumber aisles are full of men and women, with or without kids, loading up wood for projects.  And I can't wait for the day when a baby seat is added to those lumber carts!  Building is for everyone, creativity is for everyone!

And just in case you don't have a project yet, I'm adding a new one to the plan catalog for you today.

Cubby storage shelves for the wall!

I love that these cubbies put mittens and hats and mail and other accessories right where you need them.  They hold a ton, and because of the small size of each cubby, it's easy to keep everything reasonably organized.

I'll be sharing the plans for that built-in mudroom bench soon. Since you all are my friends, I'll give you a sneak peek at the hidden boot storage -

Also known as Hide-and-Seek favorite spot #1.

Plans for the wall cubbies follow (there's actually two cubby units shown on the wall with a 1x6 with hooks below).  If this is the homepage, you'll need to click Read More below to get to the plans.

Have an awesome weekend!

XO Ana + Family

PS - Love the stain color?

It's my trusty favorite - Rustoleum Early American.

General Instructions

Please read through the entire plan and all comments before beginning this project. It is also advisable to review the Getting Started Section. Take all necessary precautions to build safely and smartly. Work on a clean level surface, free of imperfections or debris. Always use straight boards. Check for square after each step. Always predrill holes before attaching with screws. Use glue with finish nails for a stronger hold. Wipe excess glue off bare wood for stained projects, as dried glue will not take stain. Be safe, have fun, and ask for help if you need it. Good luck!

Instructions

Step 1

Start by building the interior shelf and vertical dividers. I built mine with 3/4" pocket holes and 1-1/4" pocket hole screws.

Step 2

Then I built the outer frame, all out of 1x12 boards, again with pocket holes. But since I couldn't fit my drill inside to pocket hole the inner divider pieces to the outer frame, I used glue and 1-1/4" brad nails to attach the outer frame to the inner divider pieces.

IMPORTANT - Leave 3/4" gap on the back to allow for the back pieces to sit inset (see next step).

Step 3

Then I just found scrap 1x boards and place in the back, leaving gaps in between. I nailed and glued except for the top board I screwed in place because I used this board to hang the shelf to the wall.

Finishing Instructions
Preparation Instructions
Fill all holes with wood filler and let dry. Apply additional coats of wood filler as needed. When wood filler is completely dry, sand the project in the direction of the wood grain with 120 grit sandpaper. Vacuum sanded project to remove sanding residue. Remove all sanding residue on work surfaces as well. Wipe project clean with damp cloth.

It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion. Use primer or wood conditioner as needed.
Finish Used
The stain on this project is Rustoleum Early American.

I think the length of the 1x12 on the shopping list (listed at 8') is off....per the cut list, you need (2) 1x2 @ 38" (a little over 6') plus another 4'+ for the sides ((2) 1x12 @ 24 3/4).

This is a great idea and I just finished building one for my house. I'm having a hard time finding decent looking baskets to fit though. Can you tell me where I could get those baskets you used??

I am trying to complete my list for this project and am confused by the different widths. If I understand correctly, the cubbies measure 76" completed, while the shoe shelves are 72" completed. Even if you allow for 1" door frames on either side of the shoe shelf, the measurements don't match. How is that possible when the work space is the same size (appears so) from top to bottom. What am I missing?
