Make your own in drawer knife block with free plans from Ana-White.com This very easy to build kitchen drawer organizer is designed to fit almost any size drawer, hold five standard sized knives.  Step by step plans with video tutorial, cut list and shopping lists.

I'm on a mission to have as little as possible on my kitchen countertops.  It's so much easier to clean a kitchen when you don't have to move things out of the way to wipe down countertops, and I love the bare, clean look.  And who doesn't want more countertop space to work with?

But what to do with the knives?  How do I get the knife block off the kitchen countertops?

Well, I added a drawer under our cooktop (that met clearances) and built this awkward looking thing (in about 10 minutes using scrap wood)

And fit it inside a drawer,

Since it's super rare for me not to need a cutting board at the same time as a knife, I added the cutting boards to the other side of the drawer

Preparation

Shopping List
  • 1/4" plywood, at least 9-5/8" x 24" (best if plywood species matches drawer interior bottom)
  • 1 - 2x2 @ 4 feet long (hardwood preferred, but can use softwood 2x2s)
  • 1 - 1x2 @ 20"
  • 3/4" and 1-1/4" brad nails
  • quick dry or hot glue suitable for wood

Cut List

1 - 1/4" plywood @ 9-5/8" x 24" (can be cut to fit the depth of drawer right now too)

6 - 2x2 @ 7-7/8"

2 - 1x2 @ 9-5/8"

Tools
Tape Measure
Speed Square
Pencil
Safety Glasses
Hearing Protection
Circular Saw
Miter Saw
Brad Nailer
Power Sander

Instructions

Step 1

Use quick dry or hot glue to position the 2x2s and tack to the 1/4" plywood back, even spaces in between.

Once glue is dry, flip over and attach on back side with 1-1/4" brad nails.

Step 2

Repeat steps for the 1x2 knife handle support and the 1x2 divider.

Make sure you use shorter 3/4" nails when attaching the knife handle support piece.

Step 3

This in drawer knife holder is designed to work with almost any sized kitchen drawer.  Simply trim the bottom to fit snugly in your drawer, so the insert isn't moving around when the drawer opens and closes.
