Easy Build Wood King Headboard

Submitted by cookbs2 on Sat, 10/29/2011 - 17:52

I am in love with this project. My husband built this for my birthday this afternoon. It was an easy project for his first time. We haven't finished it yet. I would like for him to put a 2x6 on the top to give it some visual weight. The only problem i am having is I don't know how to finish it. What would you suggest? We like the beachy distressed look so I am thinking whitewash. Anyway, I love it! I told my husband that he was in trouble now because now I am going to give hime tons of projects to build for me.

Estimated Cost
135.00
Estimated Time Investment
Afternoon Project (3-6 Hours)
Finish Used
Unfinished at this point. We are undecided on finish. We might dark stain and then whitewash, or a turquoise wash, with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and then waxing.

Looks great! I love the beachy look too. You could also do a yellowish stain (golden pine? it might be called) and then distress it and rub over with a darker stain for a different beach look.

Photo Gallery Made Easy!

Submitted by mdean on Mon, 10/21/2013 - 12:48

I love my new photo ledges. I had a huge space on my wall and these ledges are perfect. The ledges were so easy to make. I got a kreg jig for my birthday (I never thought I would ask for a tool for a birthday present) and I have gotten so much use out of it. I saw similar ledges at pottery barn for 10 times the cost of this DIY project. I saved so much with these ledges. The kreg jig has already paid for itself. The ledges make it super easy to switch out photos and I love being able to display so many fun photos. Everyone who sees these ledges loves them!! This was my first project. Thanks Ana for the great plans!

Modified Dollhouse

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 02/24/2023 - 07:06

A few years ago for Christmas, I modified the dream dollhouse plans by splitting it in half, putting it on wheels, adding hinges and a hook and eye catch to lock it closed. My nieces were able to move it themselves, play side by side, or be on their own side of the house. And if they want, they can separate the two pieces and use them individually or as bookcases down the road. Also, I painted it to match their home. 5 years later the dollhouse has withstood the test of 3 rambunctious girls and they still love it.

Thread Holder and Photo Scrapbook Holder

Submitted by VelvetSky on Fri, 11/04/2011 - 23:06

I love this even though I did not take the time to cut the dowels properly. I needed something for my sewing thread. Just a plain board and some dowels thin enough for the spools. Drill some holes in the board and glue in the dowels. I also made the picture holder for scrapbooking. I got the idea from the Ruler Clip Art Rails on this site. Thanks!

Forward facing bookshelf

Submitted by Kero on Thu, 10/24/2013 - 12:25

This was my first build and I think it turned out pretty nice. I had been considering a new bookshelf for my daughter's room for some time because the one we had was large and clunky. This takes up significantly less floor space which makes her room seem so much larger.

The hardest part of this I found was cutting the arches out of the 1x2s. I noticed a lot of other people omitted that part, but I thought it was a neat way to add some interest so I really wanted to keep it. Unfortunately, they aren't exactly symmetrical and the cuts were very jagged. But I knew I was going for a dark paint in those spots so with a little bit of sanding you can barely tell.

Speaking of paint, I didn't realize how much even a small quart was going to cost me, and I bought two colours! But it was definitely worth it I think. The white with plum purple accents is really sharp, and my daughter loves it. In fact, I'm already planning on building a complete bedroom set for her in the same colour scheme. Hopefully it works out.

Thanks for taking a look! :)

Modified Simple Cheap Console Table

This was my first project from Ana's web site. I modified the table by expanding the trim of the stretcher to the outsides and adding a shelf. I also added an additional shelf in the middle. I cut the apron for the top down to two inches, and an inch a half for the lower two shelves. I distressed each piece of wood individually by hitting it with a bag of nails and various other things.

Estimated Cost
$40.00 - I had the stain and sand paper and polyurethane.
Estimated Time Investment
Afternoon Project (3-6 Hours)
Finish Used
I used two coats of dark walnut minwax and two coats of satin polyurethane. If anyone has any tips for their "best" finishing techniques, I'm all ears.

And what a fun project, whacking it with nails and such to distress. Did you feel de-stressed afterward?

It looks great.

I could have given the table a little bit more of my stress. Unfortunately I couldnt swing the bag too hard, because the nails would rip right through it and fly all over the place. Maybe next time i'll use a pillow cause and swing a little harder.

Home Depot DIH Workshop Rolling Storage Cart

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Sun, 01/10/2016 - 05:50

I needed more storage in my small kitchen so I modified this cart to 42 x 20 x 96. One shelf has a sliding drawer. I am very new to all of this so I mistakenly overlooked accounting for the side ends of the shelves in my calculations. I left them off, but may go back and insert 1 x 2 to complete them. Not sure yet.

My First Fully Finished Project ! YAY Thanks Ana

Submitted by fariha ali on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 21:03

I am very excited to post this project .

I used the Schoolhouse Chair with Writing Pad Desk Plan exactly and did not stain the wood. Just gave it a coat of PU and there it is .

Its not a perfect project (since I used a Jigsaw ... Yes I did as no other tools were available :() but carefully cut them straight using guide.

As a  first-timer I am happy with the result... sort of... But Thanks for inspiring Ana & Jaime !!!

I found these on a Pinterest post. I made them for my girls and they absolutely love them! A place to sleep and play. All the kids that come over ask their parents for one.
A little bedroom oasis for my little ladies. ☺️

Pine Coffee Table = Success

Tryde Coffee Table

Used: Pine wood, 2 coats Kona stain, 3 coats gloss poly, 2.5" silver screws.

Lessons Learned: Forgot to use wood glue on joints, use 10" circular saw or table saw for 4x4 posts (I used a 7.25" circular and had to cut all sides and then sand down uneven parts)

This is a heavy duty coffee table, and can easily support up to two people stacked on top of it... which was my main concern. :)

Little Helper Tower

Submitted by SecondWind on Thu, 12/08/2011 - 16:48

Love this site! I stumbled on Ana's site via Pinterest and have been hooked ever since! I used pocket screws to attach everything (the Kreg Jig is AWESOME!) Thanks for the great plans, and my daughter loves her tower! I stained it to match the cabinets in our kitchen and so our soon-to-be baby boy can use it in the future. The wood is just some cheaper pine from the local HIW.
