Simple Spa Bench

This was the second thing from KOW that I built and it turned out much better than the Tryde Side Table I tried first. My sister loves it and I want to make it for her for Christmas. However, I'd like to make hers a little longer, perhaps a little taller. She's going to use it as an entryway bench. Any ideas on changing the dimensions properly? I have a piece of 1x12 for the top that is about 48" that I'd love to use.

Hello!  I just finished my version of the Spa Bench.  I'm using it as an entry bench with shoe storage underneath.

I modified the plans by raising the shelf so that I can put shoes on the floor under and on the shelf.  I also made it 48" long and the top is 14" wide.  I used 1x12's instead of 1x10's for the main body as well, so overall it's wider than the plan.

It turned out really well and is working perfectly at our back door.

Hope that helps!

(haven't figured out the picture uploading or I would attach a shot of mine!)

Thank you, but I was wondering how you modified it? How many inches did you add here and there to Ana's plans? I'm afraid to add or subtract and mess up, so if someone has a guideline for modifying, that'd be great!

Well, it's a fairly forgiving plan.  I just sort of winged it.  I decided my top was going to be 47" and so I made the main frame 46" (so that the top overhangs that little bit)  So, if you subtract 1 1/2" from that (most 1x10's are 3/4" actual thickness) that means you make your two shelf pieces 44 1/2".  The sides are the same height as the plan (17 1/4" I think?).  Screw/nail those together, add your legs (same height 17 1/4")  Then the trim for the shelves you have to measure to be exact, it's a good idea to do that even if you followed the plan exactly so that it fits nice and tight.  Then you attach your top piece just like the plan says, leaving some overhang all the way around.

Hope that helps!
