how to rip 1x4

Submitted by thom263 on Sat, 03/08/2014 - 13:45

I'm a beginner beginner and just getting started on my first project, the adirondack table. And I'm stumped at step 1. The plans call for 1x3 boards and apparently these cannot be bought in my remote location. (I'm afraid I will run into this problem often.) The lumberyard said to get 1x4 and "just rip it" which sounded great at the time.

So now, exactly how do I do that? I have a circular saw and a huge learning curve so in your response please be detailed (and basic). Thank you for your time and patience! :)

Hi,

Just to be clear, when you say "circular saw", you mean a hand held saw like this (http://www.ahctools.co.uk/products/show/id/149#.UyGnNVF_t_0) for example.

I wouldn't advise you use a circular saw to do this at all, as 1x4 is really too narrow. Don't, whatever you do, try to do this while holding the 1x4 in your hand - sorry to seem patronising but I just want to make sure. If you want to rip a board this narrow then you should use a table saw. Even a cheap table saw is better than a circular saw for this job.

Can you give me the link to the plans you're using? It would be much easier to re-size the table so you can use your 1x4 and avoid ripping.

Cheers,
Jeremy

yes, a circular saw like in the picture.
no, would never hold with hand, good way to lose some digits.

I decided that there are enough projects from Ana White that require 1x3 boards that a solution would be preferable to resizing each and every project. The link below did just that, works like a charm and now that I have the jig made, it's a breeze to rip boards to suit the plans.

Funny enough I have three jigs just like in the video (one 8 foot long, one 5 foot and one 3 foot). I use them for cutting 4x8 foot sheets.
Out of interest, how are you clamping the plank to the jig?
