I am building a new front counter for my retail store. I am wondering if 1x4's will be a sturdy enough choice for the frame. I would rather not use 2x4's since they aren't that nice looking and will take up space with the design. I plan to use a combination of 1x4 and plywood.
i am a beginner and just feel uncertain about the strength of 1x4 at the frame.
any advice is appreciated.

Hi,
It sounds like it would be but depends on the design to a large extent - you could build it out of matchsticks if the design was right!
If the ply can support some of the weight of the counter, and the ply is thick enough (at least 1/2 inch) then it'll be strong enough. Use the ply to fill in the spaces between the 1x4 frame and make sure it's strongly attached to the frame and you'll be ok. Think about kitchen cabinets - they're often made of ply, with no structural frame at all, and can support a concrete counter top.
