What kind of work bench?

Submitted by ctychick on Fri, 05/04/2012 - 12:56

I'm getting ready to use my jig saw for the first time and I have no idea what kind of workbench or surface I need. I know people use saw horses, but I feel like they would be so unsteady. Can someone describe their set-up and how circular and jig saws are used without cutting into the work surface? Also, where/how are clamps used if you are using a saw horse? I really need a "...for Dummies" on this issue! Thanks!

I use an old door on my sawhorses. A hollow-core door can be purchased for less than $30 and makes a great table. Mine is covered with glue, paint, etc. and I wouldn't trade it for the world! If I cut something with a jigsaw or circular saw, I usually place my lumber on the ground on cement blocks. As long as the cement blocks are out of the way of the blade, cutting will be easy! Post again if you have any other questions!

Kristen has a great tutorial on cutting material with a circular saw:

Cher's suggestion works really well for a temporary workbench. If you're going to stick with this, check out http://startwoodworking.com, which has a whole bunch of information that you'll find useful, including some good but simple workbench designs, instructional videos on tools, and how to buy lumber.

And if you go the crazy route like me, and choose to use hand tools instead of power tools, it's worth watching the videos over at http://www.logancabinetshoppe.com. Rob's videos show you how to set up a shop for a lot less money that's safer, cheaper and quieter than a power tool workshop.
