Sap Sap & more Sap! Help

Submitted by Tony P on Mon, 09/10/2012 - 08:36

I'm building my first project (Loft Bed) & I have been sanding it in preparation for painting. I now have several spots that are leaking Sap. How do I stop it?

Thanks,
Tony

There's nothing for it but to let the wood stop weeping sap. You might actually want to set the weeping pieces aside to use for starting fires, because there's nothing that's going to work better.

Once it does stop weeping sap, you can seal it with shellac or sanding sealer (which is just dewaxed shellac). That will make your finish adhere more consistently. Don't bother putting it on before the weeping stops though, because you'll just wind up with bubbles under the finish.
