Almost a decade ago, I built this grid mirror.  

Over the years, I have become more and more fond of it.  I later on went and updated the look by painting it black.

This was such a great project and cost about 1/10 of a similar retail version.

Grid Mirror from Mirror Tiles

Preparation

Shopping List
  • 2 packs 12” x 12” mirror tiles
  • 3 – 1x2x8 feet long
  • 1 – 1x3x10 feet long (or two 8 feet long)
  • 2 – 3/4” x 3/4” x 10 feet long wood moulding
  • Mirror Mastic
  • Wood Glue
  • Heavy duty picture hanging hardware or french cleat system (if hanging)
Cut List
  • 4 – 1x2 @ 37-1/2”
  • 2 – 1x2 @ 51-3/4”
  • 3 – 1x3 @ 37-1/2”
  • 2 – 3/4" x 3/4" wood moulding @ 50-1/4”
  • 9 – 3/4" x 3/4" wood moulding @ 12” long

Instructions

Step 1

Nail one 1x2 to a 1x3 on edge with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails.  Repeat for two side pieces as shown in diagram.

Step 2

Nail the two sides together with 1x2s with glue.

Step 3

Space 1x3s inside the frame and nail with glue and 1-1/4" brad nails.

Step 4

Cut and set in place 3/4" moulding.  Nail and glue.

Step 5

Finish the trim between the moulding by nailing and gluing to the back 1x3s.  Make sure your mirrors will fit inside before finalizing the moulding.

Finishing Instructions
Finish Used
We recommend finishing the frame at this stage. Black spray paint is a quick and effective way of finishing.
Then glue the mirrors inside the openings.
Hang with the picture hanging kit or french cleat.
