Hi Amanda, most polyurethanes will end up yellowing at some point, so go for a lacquer, spray or paint on, or even a wax or danish oil to protect the wood without the usual yellowing. I used minwax spray lacquer on all of my projects. It goes on smooth, no sanding needed, and one bottle goes a long way.
Kate the min wax spray you use, how long does it take to dry/cure I did my first project a train table and painted it white and applied three coats of the minwax. It still smells bad. I have it in a closed room with fans and space heater running. Every day I completely freshen the air in the room . How long before it goes away. Any tips for faster curing?
It dries in 30 minutes I believe, and you want to keep doing coats every 30 mins or so. Fully cured is probably 24 hours, 72 hours before exposure to water/elements.
I would not spray it indoors though or keep it indoors but generally after a few days the fume/smell should dissipate. It will definitely go away though so don't worry.
