Help with uneven stain

Hi all -- I'm currently working on my third project from Ana White plans, the Emersen Console/Buffet. I applied Minwax pre-stain and Minwax Gunstock stain. Everything was going well, until we applied a second coat of stain outside on a 50-ish degree day in Minnesota. It froze overnight, and left a jagged dark line around an area where the stain soaked in unevenly. I tried sanding it out, but it just lightened the wood beside the line (as seen in the photos below). I can't seem to sand down the color of the rest of the piece as easily, so I stopped before I take off too much material.

We've since applied two coats of Jasco stain remover to lighten the rest of the piece. We're planning to apply another coat when it gets warmer. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? And if we can't remove it, how important is it to have the entire piece as light as the lightest portion of it before we begin staining again?
