Painting Question

I'm making a pair of bookshelves (the ones in Grace's room) using MDF and I plan on painting them black. I know I should prime it first. Is there any special kind of paint I should be using?  Satin enamel , Semi-Gloss enamel, High-Gloss enamel, etc? Do you recommend any clear top coat or poly of any sort? I just don't want to build something great and then ruin it with the paint job...

Thanks!

From what I have read I think Ana prefer's flat paint. I'm making the media unit out of MDF and planning on using Zinsser BIN primer. It stinks so you will need a respirator but it dries in an hour.
