Farmhouse Bed...with boxspring and metal frame

Submitted by mcomo on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 12:43

I have completed the Farmhouse bed but am planning to use my own frame and the box spring.  Anyone done this?  How did you attach the footboard?  I was just going to attach the frame to the headboard and then use the siderails to attach the footboard but not sure it will work.  Any suggestions?

I just asked same question on the FB page and here's what Ana told me:

"What you would do in this case is simply build the headboard and footboard, and attach the metal frame to the headboard and footboard. Attach the frame low on the legs so that there is plenty of room for your boxspring. Then if you want a siderail, it's purely decorative, so you could just go and add the siderail as a trim board. I would either use metal hardware for beds (check Rockler) or pocket holes to secure the sideboards to the legs. Hope this makes sense."

Problem is my frame doesn't go to the end of my bed.  It only goes 3/4 the way down the boxspring.

I have the same issue with my metal frame.  How did you resolve this?  I was hoping to use my exsisting frame so as to not have to invest in all the wood for slats.

I ended up making the side panels.  I attached them to the headboard and footboard with 3 'L' shaped brackets at each attachment.  I then also attached teh frame to the side rail.  I am hoping that it will hold up to normal use.  So far so good.
