Confused about fasteners

I'm getting ready to build the "Large rustic X bench" and I've already run into a few snags. I have all the wood pieces, and Orange made all my cuts (fo' freeee!). My problem now is, I can't read the measurements for the notches in the legs. I've downloaded the PDF and tried zooming, I've saved the pictures to my PC and tried zooming...nothing. It all goes blurry when I make it bigger. Surely, with all the people having success building this, I'm missing something.

Also, it keeps saying "fasten" and "fasteners", but those aren't on the list (what are they??) and then the very last person to comment in May said you need fasteners. Can anyone advise?
