Adding door to lockers

I have this great idea to build the locker cabinets and add a single door (just to the locker part--not the top or bottom cubbie (unless everyone thinks that would look terrible) that will double as a giant magnet board. That would mean the door would be 48" wide and 37 1/2" tall, and would have a piece of metal attached to it. (I'd choose the lightest sheet metal that magnets would stick to.)

I haven't built anything before. Would that door be too heavy? Would it look dumb to have a single door instead of a double door? I'm guessing that's not something that is commonly done. I'm thinking it would be a simple, flat door with some type of molding as a frame. (I guess it would be possible to split the door, but since I wouldn't want framing to go through the center of the magnet board, I think the metal would be too sharp in the center.)

Whether or not I can use the door will determine where the lockers go in the house.

Thanks!

Doors are a little complicated because of their required accuracy in construction and mounting. You might not want to do it on your first build. Even pros use a lot of finessing to the final fitting.
