MDF questions

My husband and I have been coming up with some fun picture frames made out of MDF. We have our patterns all made and figured out and are trying to find the best ways to pain and finish them. We have noticed that the edges that we have routered really suck the primer and paint in fast. I found a tip to use drywall compound on the edges, sand, and then prime as that seals it. Also are there any tips to get a smoother finished edge? I have sanded quite a bit but the edge just isn't as smooth as I would like it. Thanks in advance!

MDF isn't really designed to make very clean edges. I seal my edges with shellac, then a layer of thick polyurethane (expose a small amount to air for half an hour or so, it will thicken). It's still not perfect but it's better. I have somewhat better results with using solid wood and a sharp blade, but that's difficult to do with irregular shapes.

Chalk based compound, as used to finish walls, is what I use.
MDF is a pain on cut lines exposed on the sides, it just isn't and won't be smooth enough.
