Hidden latch!

I have an idea to make a book shelf for the main door to our library. The hidden part that I want to do is what you see in the movies where you tilt a book out and the door opens. Any ideas where to get plans for this or ideas how to make this work?

That's just too "mystery house" for me to resist, so I drew up an idea in Sketchup. It's based on using one of the lever style doorknobs.

That's a 2x6 you can cover with a book cover, a couple hinges, a couple pieces of 1x2, and a short piece of 1.5" dowel. The lever style doorknobs usually have a curve at one end, which I don't show here, but you would want the end curving down.

I'm sure you would need to fiddle with the placement to get enough lift on the handle. The shelf below would need false book bindings to hide the mechanism.

Here is a minimal Sketchup file you can download.
