Crackle Finish with Elmers Glue

I'm wondering if anyone has used the method outlined on this site:

My mom had found a spray paint crackle kit at the dollar store (the sticker on it was from lowes and had a "clearance" price of 10.97) but I emptied that can just spraying a tiny shelf and 2 small picture frames. I see that I can buy a qt of Valspar crackle medium for 15 bucks....but I can get a gallon of glue for 14 bucks.

I want to crackle a small dresser, I suppose I should just try it out on a scrap of wood and see what happens but I figured I'd see if anyone else has already done this.

It works but you will have to experiment to see what combination of thinned paint and drying time for the glue gives you the results you want.

You have several variables:

1 - amount of glue thinning
2 - thickness of glue coat

3 - drying time for glue

4 - paint coat thinned or not.

Take some scraps of lumber and give them all a base coat, and mess with the crackling. Label the boards so you know what you did, and store them for the next time.

I've heard of this working too, but haven't done it myself!  Please share your results - would love to know if this actually works.  I agree, that crackle finish is so spendy!
