1x16's 1x18's 1x24's etc

So I did see where Ana posted about cutting these out of plywood or the MDF(?) boards but I am wondering how they "finish". Aren't these boards small pieces of wood pressed/glued/etc? All these sizes are special order, at least around here. I really want to go with a small budget. Let me break it down like this:

I want to make 2 Cube Drawer Benches with Bookcases http://ana-white.com/2010/09/c.....bench.html they call for 10' of 1x18 each

I found this, HOW-TO: The Invention of the 1×16 and the 1×24 Boards http://ana-white.com/2010/02/h.....-1x24.html

I really want to get a smooth flat surface. I want a "rich" warm look when finished. Is there a product or something I am missing to use? Any tricks etc or do I take a sander to it? I just feel like I am missing something here.

Thanks.

I'm not sure I completely understand your post but I will try to help. When Ana talks about 1x16, 1x18 and 1x24 boards, she means to buy a 4'x8' piece of MDF or plywood and have it cut into strips of those length. So a 4x8 sheet would yield three 15 1/2" (1x16) strips or two 23 1/2" strips (1x24). I'm not sure about the 1x18 because I haven't really looked at any plans that call for that measurement. But this is what she says in the comments of the plan you posted:

Hi Dec, when we talk about a 1×18, it’s either a project panel and it will be more spendy, or it’s a piece of plywood cut into strips 18″ wide, 8′ long. Also, 18″ wide MDF shelving would work and be inexpensive. Check out this post for more information http://ana-white.com/2010/02/h.....1×24.html

Remember also that MDF does not take stain like natural wood (even ply wood).  I use MDF only when I apply primer and paint as a finish.  If you want a "warm" finish, you'll have to use real wood or else try to mix paint to create that tone.
