cal king farmhouse bed- meant to have boxspring underneath?

Thinking of doing the cal king farmhouse bed, but we do not have a boxspring.  I'm wondering if the plans are designed with the intention of having a boxspring + mattress, or it the plans are meant for the mattress to be directly on the slats.  Thanks!

I am currently building the twin size farm house bed. Unless I want to cut down headboard legs, I will definately need a boxspring, which I don't have.  I am sure you can forgo the box spring, but you will need to adjust your placement of rails on headboard and footboard. To have the mattress come up on the headboad, measure your mattress and go down from the bottom of headboard to height you are comfortable wtih. The twin plans are a bit harder to work with since the side rails do not mount in post. Someone else on here built the queen and I really liked the brackets they used to make the side rails easy to come off an on. You can find them on http://www.rockler.com by searching surface mounted bed rail hardware. There are several different types and skill level varies.  Even in the twin, the headboard is incredibly heavy. So lovely though and made to last. Good luck!
