Play Fridge - Gap on Doors?

Submitted by kristina on Sat, 12/18/2010 - 07:59

I'm currently working on the play fridge with the side by side double doors and this is my very first project so my experience is zero.

When I started to look to see how the doors would fit on, I realized there will be a huge gap!

Here is a pic of my fridge in it's current state: http://picasaweb.google.com/lh.....directlink

My 1x8s were 7.25". Is that standard width for a 1x8 or does it vary by store, supplier, etc? The interior measurement is 15.5" creating a whole inch wide gap with both doors on. Even with the hinges adding a little space on, it will still be a large gap. Large enough to see inside the fridge with the doors closed. I don't like how it looks at all. I was trying to figure out what I had done wrong so I took a look at the inspiration blog post by Ana to see what others' doors looked like.

Here's the link to that post:

If you look at the photo from Edfrank1777, there is practically no gap at all, but in the photo just below it by Anna, the fridge doors have a large gap when closed similar in size to the gap I am going to have if I install my doors as is.

Why such a large difference? More importantly, how can I fix it?

I haven't made this but I noticed in the pics some had gaps and some didn't.  If you scroll down to Johanna's pic you can see she put what look like 1x2s on the edge of the doors, I presume to hide the gap.  It looked like the 1x2 was off set a little and not flush.  That would be my only suggestion!  Good luck!!

Putting the 1x2 on the sides and then attaching the doors to that was going to be my suggestion as well ;)

Well, I appreciate the suggestions. Thank you! I went to Orange to get more lumber and happened to ask for their opinion too and one lovely gentleman suggested nailing/gluing a 1/2x3/4" piece of pine moulding to the edges of the doors. Same idea, but it made it flush and exactly closed the gap or at least it will in theory because I haven't done that yet. I have it nailed, filled, sanded, and ready to be primed. They look like one board instead of two nailed together so I'm very pleased. I'm planning to use the European hinges on the inside. Hoping to get this done tomorrow night. =D

Once you get the hinges and doors actually on the fridge, the gap closes tremendously, but definitely does not disappear. My hubby just finished last night. It still looks great though. It is just up to you as to the look you want. But my hubby felt that either the doors needed to be increased in width or the fridge smaller. At first, I thought I got sanding happy, but no that wasn't the case!

Please let me know if you would like to see a picture of the fridge. It is hidden away right now.
