Fort bed - specifically how to cross brace?

Submitted by Maureen on Tue, 01/18/2011 - 06:17

Here is the plan:  http://ana-white.com/2010/05/furniture-plans-fort-bed.html

I made this as specified in the plan.  I did use 6' metal angles along both sides to attach the slats.  The problem is the "wiggle".  I have added several metal corner braces and an L bracket in one place too.

I have seen cross bracing suggested.  I understand the theory (two diagonals) but cannot find exactly HOW to do it.  Do I attach the two diagonals so they are screwed into the top and bottom, or into the two sides?  Does that make sense?

Does anyone have any better suggestions?  My 4 year old is mad because it is set up but I won't let him sleep on it until I feel it is more stable!

TIA!!!

I would put another 2x2 going length wise up the back of the bed.  I would also use pocket holes to screw it in.  Also if you wanted to you could put diagnol brackets in each corner on the back side of the bed and on each end.  Again I would figure out a way to use the kreg and put in pocket holes.  Those things are so strong!!
