Anchoring Shelving Units to Wall???

Submitted by pengyou on Wed, 08/24/2011 - 12:39

What is the best way to attach or anchor shelving units to the wall and each other? Will simple cleats do the trick, similar to how kitchen cabinets are hung?

What do you recommend as far as the baseboards are concerned; do you prefer removing the existing molding, then trimming everything out after the shelves have been anchored? Or do you prefer cutting the shelving units to fit over the molding?

Thanks for your feedback and advice!!!

If they are going to hold really heavy objects, the cleat system (also called "French cleat") is the best.

For something like the $10 ledge, a screw through the backing into a stud is adequate.

To hold them connected? Some sort of bolt system running through the sides of both ... Tee-nuts or a bolt with a cap nut and large washer to spread the load so you don't tear out the side of the cabinet.

if the back is 1/2" or thicker, you can just screw that into a stud or wall anchor like tsu mentioned. if it's thin like 1/4" that you see on kitchen cabinets, putting a horizontal cleat like you mentioned would be reasonable. using longer drywall screws bored through the adjoining face frames is sufficient to hold them together. i prefer to cut an opening for the trim instead of cutting the trim.
