Building the C&B Drake Desk

Submitted by jigganancy on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 05:04

I have a small guest room / office and would love to build the C&B Drake Desk. I would love Ana to post a legit plan, but I'll be happy with some advice too. I have sketched some rough ideas of cuts, but am asking for help. This is the type of desk I'm trying to build.

Crate & Barrel – Drake Desk: $400

However, I am dying over the $400 price tag that is too steep for my budget.

A local glass company (Denver Interior Glass) priced a quarter inch of

glass with a rounded edge (approximate size of 46" x 26") at $75. I

can't imagine the wood costing any more than $25 max, the slides at $15

and $25 for misc items like decorative wire/ paint/ stain. My budget is

to keep the cost under $140. I guess it could be made without the glass

too to save money. My plan is to make the entire desk and then take it

to the glass company so they can get it sized to fit.

I have spec'ed out the sides and the back, where I'm stuck is the

drawer slide. This is my first plan I'm drawing up, but I was hoping for a

fellow builder (or Ana) to drop in with some advice on the desk.

Here are rough plans.

—————————–

… The sides of the desk remind me of the Parson style bookshelf that ana posted last week.

(10) 2 x 2 at 24" (for the sides)

(4) 2 x 2 @ 30" (for the sides) … The tops should be notched or add additional wood so the glass has something to rest on

(1) 2 x 3 @ 46" (for the top back support)

(1) 2 x 2 @ 46" (for the bottom back support)

Decorative Wiring

Drawer Slides

Glass approx 46" x 26" (1/4 inch thick)

Before I start building away, can someone chime in with any recommended modification??

Or, how to go about building the drawer slide?? I'm thinking MDF/Plywood for the bottom, 1x10 for the front and 1x2 for the sides.
