Grace's Upholster Daybed ... to a Twin?

Submitted by jigganancy on Mon, 11/08/2010 - 08:05

I have a small room, and an even smaller hallway. The other weekend I bought a loveseat and it got stuck in the hallway. No pivoting would make it fit. The gang from Friends couldn't pivot it enough to make it fit :/

So, it's time to make furniture that will fit.

I'm looking at making Grace's toddler bed to a twin. I would like it to be snug but I also don't want to build a beautiful bed and have the mattress not fit. Since a twin is 39 x 75, how much extra should I factor in when building?

I imagine a toddler bed is quite low. Would anyone recommend raising the bed a bit?

These are the dimensions I'm thinking of. Has anyone done modified this plan already. Does this modification seem okay?

2 – 2×2 @ 75″ (Frame Sides)
7 – 2×2 @ 36″ (Frame Slats)
2 – 2×2 @ 9″ (Front Legs)
2 – 1×6 @ 39″ (Siderails)
1 – 1×6 @ 77″ (Measure to fit, front rail)

Cut List for Headboard

2 – 2×2 @ 29″ (Headboard Legs)
1 – 2×2 @ 72″ (Headboard Top Frame)
1 – 2×6 @ 72″ (Headboard Bottom Frame)

That sounds like a great project!

I think the modifications you calculated will work.

If you want to use the daybed as a sofa at least as often as you use it as a bed I would not raise it. The seating hight of sofas is 17" to 18". If the top of the slats is as 11 1/2 " and you add a 8" or 9" matress you are already higher than the standard hight.
